Coastal Currents Festival continues to impress and surprise this week as Back Door Gallery make a welcome return. Fresh from their dramatic contribution to the festival launch, Back Door Gallery will present a weekend of performance from artist duo Smalls-Murray.

Roaming the old town from a base amongst the Seafood and Wine Festival at Rock-a-Nore car park, Smalls-Murray’s ‘Petty Tache’ promises to raise an eyebrow and induce a smile. The diminutive Smalls stated this week that he was “looking forward to a little silliness by the seaside”; the duo also revealed that their performance would once again involve the ever-willing people of Hastings.

Smalls-Murray will be in town 11am-4pm both Saturday 18^th and Sunday 19^th September, so head down to Rock-a-Nore and place your order at ‘Petty Tache’ to become part of fun at Coastal Currents Festival.

The Back Door Gallery presents Smalls-Murray a performance intervention duo who are the proud owners of the 'Pocillum' a vast and varied collection of egg cups. The pair began collection the egg cups in 2007 and have around 900 containers in total.

The duo recently displayed a selection from their archive at the De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill delivering a presentation and Q&A session providing them with the an opportunity to talk about there ever growing museum and endeavour to share their passion for egg cups.

Back Door BARTER at the Norwich Fringe festival 2010

Back Door BARTER will utilise the galleries roaming space by transforming it into the Norwich trade centre of art, offering everyone the opportunity to exchange art for art, with Back Door acting as the trading agent. A selection of work produced by artists who have previously shown at the gallery, as well as invited guests, will be on show and open for offers in exchange for other pieces of art. The stock held will change over the duration of the day as work is swapped, exchanged and traded repeatedly. Everything and anything will be considered for a proposed exchange; however accepted exchanges and the final decision will remain with the trading agents. If your first offer is not accepted do not be disheartened, there will be plenty of trading opportunities for a variety of pieces, and if all else fails try offering a Curly-Wurly as part of the deal and see what happens…

Back Door Gallery kicks of it's 2010 programme with L'Oeuf, our brand new open submission project. L'Oeuf provides a rare opportunity for artists to work outside of the normal restraints, and contribute to a progressive publication that celebrates the initial spark at the centre of all things creative:

Idea: a thought or suggestion as to a possible cause of action.

Backdoor Gallery strives to recognise and celebrate the importance of ideas.

Backdoor Gallery is inviting artists to submit ideas, specifically those that can not, will not, and possibly should not, be realised; the initial sparks that would otherwise be discarded and forgotten. Ideas are the root of creativity, yet they are rarely celebrated and often discarded or ignored. Without ideas nothing changes, nothing progresses, and nothing happens.

L’Oeuf is an open submission publication created to preserve ideas from artists. Every 100 submissions will be compiled to form an edition of L’Oeuf. L’Oeuf is an ongoing project with no deadlines.

Submissions must be suitable for black and white reproduction and not exceed 1 A4 page.

Submissions will be catalogued in the order that they are received. All ideas that fulfill the requirements will be entered into a periodical publication. Each artist will receive a copy of the publication; further copies will be distributed to galleries, public libraries, and institutions.

We are not interested in the context, reasoning, or viability of the idea, but simply the initial thought that excited you. Ideas can take many different forms; they can be humorous, serious, tedious or anywhere in-between. All ideas will be treated equally and you will never be required to justify or realise your submission.

Back Door Gallery is pleased as punch to have survived the credit crunch, the split of Oasis, and a heavy cold, and make it to its third birthday. In recognition of this milestone, and to launch our latest project, 'L'Ouef', Back Door invites you to the BACK DOOR Birthday Beard Bonanza at the Handlebar (downstairs at the Bicycle Shop), St Benedicts Street, Norwich, on the evening of Thurs 10th Dec. Entry is free with a beard (real or manmade) and remember to bring your dancing shoes.

Lolly at Coastal Currents

Lolly is a touring collaboration between Rene Duboir and the BACK DOOR GALLERY. For the exhibition the gallery has manifested as BACK DOOR De Change. The portable space will be touring the country trading in the artists 25D, 50D, and 100D notes.

BACK DOOR De Change's first show was as pasrt of Coastal Currents Festival in Hastings, resided at George Street chess square on Saturday 12th and Sunday13th of September 2009. Many thanks to all those who visited us and traded to help make the weekend a big success.

BACK DOOR GALLERY attended the launch of Coastal Currents festival at the Hastings town hall at Bexhill's De la Warr Pavilion. Congratulations to Creative Coast and performance artists Tit Tat on a successful and entertaining evening.

BACK DOOR Best in Show, NUCA 2009

BACK DOOR GALLERY has announced Clare Pastorius’ ‘Call/Response’ sound installation as their ‘Best in Show’ at the NUCA Degree Show 2009.

Artist Clare Pastorius describes her winning installation as “an exploration of the language-less voice in dialogue. The work investigates the theme of ‘call and response’ and alludes to many diverse situations; I imagined the communicative calls of our early hominid ancestors at a time in humankind’s history before symbolic language, but I also wanted to make reference to the interactions between mother and infant, the universal ‘call and response’ of singing in all cultures and other turn-taking rituals and behaviours.”

Gallery founder Luke Murray cited a ‘playful ambiguity’ as the initial appeal of the piece. Explaining further, he added “the work asks for a response and interaction from the audience, which engages you with an installation that has depth of ideas and longevity far beyond the initial hook. It was a confident and challenging approach that caught the eye of the Back Door Gallery team”.

Clare was presented with a ‘Best in Show’ trophy and offered the opportunity to work with the gallery in its forthcoming exhibition programme.
Clare’s new exhibition ‘Resound’, an installation at Ripon Cathedral, opens on the 10th July.
